A deacon is called to lead people in prayer and sacramental life, the cardinal said. He recounted the story of St. Philip, who, on his way from Samaria to Gaza stopped to preach to and baptize an Ethiopian official. The lesson to be learned from St. Philip is that as deacons they must always be ready to "do what needs to be done to make the people of God holy."
